Frequently Asked Questions
IMAGIO coatings technology can provide a very broad range of colors and gloss levels.
Is IMAGIO coatings technology a "two-stage" paint? All of the IMAGIO coatings technology colors shown were created using a 2-step application process except for Candy Apple Red, which was applied in 3 steps.
Can you describe a 2-step coatings application process? In a 2-step application process, the color is applied with the first coat of paint (base coat), and the second coat (clear coat) is applied shortly after the base coat has been applied. The clear coat allows the color of the base coat to be seen through it and can display any gloss level (high-gloss, semi-gloss, matte) or even soft touch.
How many steps were used to create the soft touch (Velvecron®) effect spoon? The soft touch effect is obtained through a 2-step process. A special soft touch clear coat is applied onto the colored base coat. Soft touch can be applied over any color or effect base coat. Velvecron® soft touch is also available as a 1-step color coating in a limited number of colors.
Can a customer's current paint equipment be adapted to use IMAGIO coatings technology? In most cases existing paint systems will be able to be used to apply IMAGIO coatings technology. If not, PPG - who is currently working with a number of paint applicators around the world - can recommend a paint applicator who can apply their liquid coatings systems.
Will mold defects be hidden through the use of IMAGIO coatings technology? The painted surface, regardless of coatings technology chosen, will only be as good as the part surface, which needs to be free of defects. Many minor defects, however, can be covered with low-gloss clearcoat materials and opaque, hiding basecoat materials.
