When You're Hot, You're Hot...

The experts at the Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) Color Competence and Design Center in Newark, Ohio, are always on the cutting edge of color, taking advantage of new technologies to meet the needs of their customers. Now, they are ready to unveil their latest "hot" new solution.

LED lighting is all the rage, according to Senior Chemist Terry Bush, one of the experts at the Design Center. That's no surprise, given the trend for companies to save energy. But this hot lighting technology may be a little too "hot" for its own good: hot spots can occur where intense light comes off the light source, and the diffuser, whose task is to filter out that intense light so that it doesn't blind the user, is not up to the task.

Bush and the rest of the team at the Design Center saw an opportunity: diffuse the hot spots while letting as much light through as possible. They stretched existing technology to develop a solution; an additive package, which optimizes light transmittance along with light diffusion, thus diffusing hot spots while still meeting customers' maximum light throughput needs.

The technology was developed in response to the expected demand for LED lighting in a variety of markets, including industrial, commercial and residential. By tailoring the degree of light diffusion in relation to the LED light source intensity while maintaining maximum light transmission, Bayer is able to customize the technology to meet the needs of most applications.

"This new technology is a huge win for both designers and our customers, because it meets both aesthetic and functional demands," Bush said. "We're very excited to offer an LED innovation that is both flexible for designers and practical for users."

So, keep an eye out for this new offering from BMS' Color Competence and Design Center — it's another example of how BMS is taking the lead in LEDs.
