Fantasia® Color Technologies Offer a Healthy Dose of Inspiration for Medical Products

How can products used for medical applications stand out from the competition? How do you create devices that are effective and biocompatible, while still incorporating that needed shot of color?

At MD&M West 2008, Bayer MaterialScience demonstrated how Fantasia® color and special effects technologies can enhance the functionality and design of medical products. Use our technologies to differentiate your product lines and brands ... To accentuate key components ... To color-code devices for quick identification ... Even help designate instrumentation types. All in medical grade (meeting the requirements of the FDA-modified ISO-10933 Part 1 tests for 30-day indirect blood contact applications) or color options that have not been tested for biocompatibility.

Just one example of our medical applications is found in Medtronic Physio-Control's striking yellow and black LIFEPAK® CR Plus Defibrillator. The yellow case, made of Bayblend® PC/ABS blend resin, was overmolded with a black polyurethane to provide both functional and decorative features. The overmolded polyurethane adheres well to the Bayblend PC/ABS blends case, so no mechanical features are needed to hold it in place. As a result, the case is strong and has excellent scuff resistance--perfect for portability!

Our LEDA® compounded color technology has also enhanced Alcon Grieshaber AG's "Greishaber RevolutionTM DSP" micro forceps and scissors. This new generation of surgical instruments was designed to help combat vision-impairing retinal disease. What makes them unique is their ability to be rotated while in use. But an added twist in their visual design means each tool's distinctive color makes selecting the right instrument easier--when accuracy really counts.
