Color Chameleon: Favored Shades
Reflect World Sentiments

Color trends come and go. But what makes a particular shade resonate with consumers involves so much more than simply taste.

Color Marketing Group's Spring 2008 Conference — held March 29 to April 1 in Montreal, Canada — delved into the psychology behind today's hottest color trends. And according to CMG predictions, the direction colors take over the next five years will be a multi-faceted reflection of an increasingly high-speed, complex, global mindset.

What this means is manufacturers can expect to shift their palettes toward shades that reflect the rate of change in our economy, our technology, and the new ways we work and play. The new spectrum showcases colors that are not easily defined, that appear to have movement and employ new technologies to give them the feel of speed, energy and engineering. Excellent examples of this color trend are found in Dragon, Night Moves and Turbo — three new choices from Fantasia® color technologies, designed specifically to address your up-and-coming needs. Dragon shifts easily from rich coppery shades, to an iridescent green, and back again. Turbo has a feeling of weight, of speed and of sleek machinery. And Night Moves glows in the dark with an almost opalescent blue shine. Each offers a "wow" factor that's entirely modern, entirely high-tech.

Because of an international perception of uncertainty that surrounds today's headlines, consumers also feel a certain degree of risk aversion and will tend to seek refuge in "safer" colors. This means neutrals — unique brown and gray tones mixed with elements of more familiar green and blue colors. These muted shades represent common worries about pollution and the economy, and a return to the natural, soothing look of sand and complex stone colors.

The natural neutrals described above also join more vivid shades to represent the colors of increasingly global thinking. As technology connects people around the world, consumers are becoming more interested in learning about cultures other than their own. Color in the next five years will reflect these aesthetics, celebrating the colors traditional to regions around the globe as well as more "natural" colors from the blue and green families.

Lastly, with the stresses of a complex world, also comes the need for recreation. CMG envisions a selection of colors demonstrating a feeling of play, both indoors and out. Here, the fun is found through colors with punch — shades that empower and surprise. Colors with the zing of a neon sign, or with the bold strength of a sports team uniform, tuned to the trends that will shape future color developments. Bayer's new League is an excellent example of the latter. With its slick wet-paint-look deep blue violet, it's a day at the ball park, an evening of hockey excitement, and a Super Bowl Sunday all in one.

By understanding how mood and mindset drive color, Fantasia color technologies continue to offer customers the colors that appeal, entice and astound.
