Bright Opportunities Power New Collaboration with Lighting Science Group

More hours of energy-saving illumination from a single light component... That's what light emitting diode (LED) technology offers today's consumers over traditional incandescent lightbulbs. And now, a collaboration between Bayer MaterialScience and Lighting Science Group is prepared to switch on new innovation in this industry—through greener applications, greater durability and a growing line of polycarbonate options for the LED market.

LED technology already brings cost-effective exterior illumination to building lighting, traffic signals and signage. A single LED unit can offer up to 50,000 hours of needed light. That's 12 straight hours of light a day for 14 years!

As the world looks to reduce energy consumption, it's little wonder that LEDs promise a bright future for companies like Lighting Science Group (LSG), a leading developer and manufacturer of intelligent and energy-efficient LED lighting solutions...

And the strategic alliance between Lighting Science Group and Bayer MaterialScience represents the next-generation of advanced illumination.

In the past, manufacturers used standard plastic grades in their LED housing applications, which tended to yellow and crack with age.

But BMS polycarbonates, in grades designed specifically for LED solutions, are unique. These Makrolon polycarbonate and Bayblend PC/ABS blend resin offer a smart choice for high brightness applications.

Makrolon LED2245, for example, can replace glass optics. It has the durability of Makrolon polycarbonate, but transmits a very high amount of light with low haze, all while resisting heat. Grades of 5VA clear material, and grades developed specifically for metal insert molding, will also be available soon.

And once you mold your LED components, consider an LED housing using one of our upcoming line of Bayblend PC/ABS blend resin—made from recycled post-consumer content. It's a durable, environmentally conscious alternative that allows you the creative flexibility of a broad color palette. And it lets you modify your products wherever the trends take you.

With this new collaboration, bright ideas abound.
