New Resin Helps Super-Slim Electronics Stand Up to Consumers' Tough Love

We toss them into a pocket, a bag... We accidentally drop them... We expose them to everything from blistering heat and cutting cold to hand sanitizer and suntan lotion. Yes, when it comes to today's portable consumer electronics, the more we love 'em, the more they seem to take a beating.

But thanks to a new resin from Bayer MaterialScience, a plastic-metal hybrid process is now helping designers build the lightweight, super-slim products consumers want—while ensuring the durability that takes what consumers can dish out.

Introducing Makroblend UT5205, a new polycarbonate/polyester resin.

Optimized for metal insert molding, this exciting new resin forms a sleek, protective outer layer over metal frameworks. The metal insert offers the rigidity consumers expect in quality hand-held devices... While the Makroblend UT5205 resin offers protective strength... a comfortable, touchable texture... and virtually all the color and contour design options you expect from a plastic.

But unlike other plastics—which do not respond to temperature like metal, and can cause cracking—Makroblend UT5205 has been formulated specifically to work with metal insert molding.

Its protective surface helps prevent foods, personal care chemicals—and those unexpected demonstrations of gravity—from taking their toll on beloved technology.

And where alternatives like die-casting or machining metal parts can be costly—and produce a poor surface finish in the final product—the plastic-metal hybrid process is cost-effective and offers beautiful results.

Interested in learning more about how Makroblend UT5205 can help you make elegant, cost-effective and ultra-thin consumer devices that stand up to the abuses of everyday life?
