Whatever the Weather, Weatherable Plastics' Colors Last
Three new grades of weatherable plastic resins, all of which can be injection molded or co-injection molded over a substrate material, are designed to meet customer demand for materials that can be used in rugged outdoor applications ranging from lawn and garden to automotive, agriculture and transportation. These resin blends are designed for superior resin stability and with mechanical properties to ensure that the end product looks and performs like new longer — whatever Mother Nature's mood.
- Bayblend® W90 XG, an opaque, very high flow UV-stabilized polycarbonate/acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (PC/ASA) resin, is formulated by Bayer MaterialScience for injection molding parts that require good surface appearance and weather resistance for outdoor applications.
- Bayblend® W100 XG, an opaque, medium flow UV-stabilized PC/ASA resin can literally take the heat and is designed for high-heat applications in which increased thermal resistance is needed.
- Makroblend® WT203 (PC/polyester) resin, was specially formulated to retain its impact properties after weathering exposure over an extended time period, making it suitable to replace metal or painted plastic parts in outdoor applications that were previously thought to be unsuitable for PC/polyester blends.
At Bayer MaterialScience's Newark, Ohio, facility the polymers are tailored by compounding them with additives and other enhancing agents and our color design experts guide customers in the selection of tailored, trend-right color palettes that will meet end-use application testing requirements.
LEDA compounded resin technology is one of three technologies included in Bayer MaterialScience Fantasia® color technologies — the industry's most complete, one-stop solution for color and special effects for plastic part design. LEDA compounded color technology adds colorants and special effect additives right in the pellet to yield molded-in colors and special effects such as metallic, sparkle, shimmer, pearlescence and glow-in-the-dark.
