Bayer MaterialScience Goes to the Olympics
While the big stars this Olympic season were the athletes gracing our television screens, strength, grace and high performance took center stage in another, more subtle way during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China—with the help from Bayer MaterialScience and Makrolon® polycarbonate.
Did you know...?
...The roof of the Shenyang Olympic Center Stadium was made from Makrolon® polycarbonate sheet? Jiangsy Huning Steel Mechanism Co. Ltd (JHSM) selected BMS' Makrolon polycarbonate for its low deflection under load, its high transparency, its high impact resistance, its flexibility and its strength.
...Makrolon® polycarbonate and an artist's keen eye turned the exterior of the German Embassy in Beijing into an Olympic-influenced art installation? Chinese artist Li Jiwei transformed more than 1,300 square meters of Makrolon sheets into a giant sports shirt, dressing the outside of the entire German Embassy in light-weight polycarbonate. Perfect for large-area usage because of its minimal weight per unit area, Makrolon is also a smart material choice due to its good impact and breaking strength. It can be molded using cold bending or thermal processes, giving artists like Li Jiwei greater options over a great scale.
...Transparent Makrolon polycarbonate made waves at the Olympic swimming center, as part of an abstract "art floor?" Another work by Li Jiwei, Makrolon formed the basis for the "Bubble Bar," an exciting art installation embedded in the upper floor of the Olympics Water Cube sports center. The artist indicates he identifies with the polycarbonate in some ways because, like Makrolon, his work is transparent and tolerant, generous, all embracing and connective.
...The futuristic roof of the the Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium protects spectators while nurturing the grass using Makrolon polycarbonate? That's right, the transparent inner ring in the roof of this striking landmark has been created using 13,000 square meters of Makrolon polycarbonate sheeting. Designed to transmit more than 85% of light through the six millimeter thick sheets, using Makrolon meant the stands sheltered by this clear, clever material could be built close to the edge of the playing field. Spectators stay sheltered, while the grass gets the light it needs to grow!
