Opposites are a Powerful Attraction
in New IDSA Booth Design

"Artificial" and "Natural." They may seem like polar opposites, but today's advanced polymers, flexible thermoplastics and durable coatings are now more than ever blurring the lines between nature and manufacture...

And that's what a new booth at the Industrial Designer's Society of America (IDSA) National Conference will showcase from September 10-13.

Part of a BMS partnership with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the booth design leverages the IDSA National Conference theme of "polar opposites" to highlight the dynamic new ways BMS materials and technologies reflect nature—and even harness it.

Focusing on materials that change the way we look at life, the booth reveals relevant and innovative products that help designers channel the beauty and intensity of the world around us... gain resilient, sustainable performance from their products... and promise some very surprising new capabilities.

Less surprisingly, the booth theme itself emerged as a part of another wondrous process— collaboration. It began when Art Institute of Pittsburgh design students were challenged to apply BMS technologies in a way that would showcase the products' strengths in striking new ways— while still meeting the spatial and resource criteria of the BMS booth.

After a fun-filled day of hands-on demonstrations that left the students breathless and inspired, the students left to research, regroup and return several weeks later with six different applicable theme concepts.

The chosen theme seemed to be one very natural extension of the innovations in the BMS product line:

From a self-healing coating that leverages the sun to mend surface scratches in an automotive finish...

And polyurethane that can adapt to the drama of a gunshot...

To polyurethane foam with the look and feel of bamboo or stone...

Polycarbonates with colors and graphics that stand up to nature's fiercest conditions...

And panels that exploit the sun's power.

In fact, the materials showcased in this Phoenix event might just change the way you look at life. And set in the remarkable Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa location— dubbed "the Jewel of the Desert"— the building's innovative Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design is one more example of the striking ways materials can blur the lines between the artificial, and the natural.

We hope to see you there!
