Creative, By Design:
New Customer Design Center Opens in Ohio

Desgin Center 1
“Design.” Once described as “the glimmer in God’s eye,” this ancient art form is now broadening its horizons, seeking inspiration from designers and customers alike. The lure of color, curvature and creativity no longer makes any distinctions. Along the journey from design to deliverable, experts at Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS) play an active role in the design process with their customers, encouraging interaction to arrive at a functional, yet stylish, result.

Desgin Center 2
To advance this interaction, BMS recently opened a new, state-of-the-art Design Center addition to the company’s Color Competence Center at its Newark, Ohio, compounding plant. Intended to be as “non-manufacturing” as possible, the new, interactive Design Center allows customers to explore the creative aspects of design, immersing themselves in its colorful spirit. The result? A more personalized and streamlined process for BMS customers to obtain custom color matches.

Nine New Shades of the Rainbow:
Latest Fantasia® Technology Colors Add Metallic Sparkle and Vivid Spectrum to Thermoplastic Part Design

Inspired by recent technology-driven trends in color and design, BMS has crafted an exciting new set of LEDA® compounded color technology effects, designed to complement BMS’ Makrolon® polycarbonate .

Fantasia Chairs
Boldly venturing where few colors have gone before, metallic hues in BMS’ line of Fantasia® color and special effect technologies offer consumers an edgy look into the future. A new cavalier collection of tinny shades is pushing the limits of silver and gold, spilling over into the brilliant spectrum of greens, blues, reds and purples. These three new techno-type ASTER® metal flake effects are: Area 51 (dark, nickel-like hue with flashes of greens, golds and purples), Cadet (lustrous metallic gunmetal with a cold blue edge) and Iguana (greenish shade hovering on the edge of gray).

In further acknowledgment of Roy G. Biv and the timeless rainbow from which he hails, BMS has also designed six additional trendy colors, including: Goji Berry (muted red), Grotto (very dark blue), Stilettos (rich red), Tickle (light powdery pink), Torte (dark, chocolate brown) and Traffic (yellow with a tinge of orange).

Innovative New Chair Form Showcases LEDA® Compounded Color Technology Offerings for Thermoplastic Part Design

Fantasia Chairs
Achieving the desired surface effect for a large and complex plastic component using a small, flat sample is difficult and can lead to lackluster results. That’s why BMS is providing its customers with a brand new tool to help them visualize BMS’ extensive arsenal of colors and special effects available from LEDA® compounded color technology  for thermoplastic part design.

The new tool is called the “chair form” and can be molded from any of BMS’ engineered plastics. Reminiscent of a deck lounge chair in shape, the new three-dimensional sample showcases a complex curvature, as well as a flat area and a textured area. A cut-out also enables customers to much more realistically imagine the application of molded-in colors and special effects.

“A flat color chip doesn’t effectively represent a real product design. When designers are trying to visualize what a product is going to look like, they need to see a three-dimensional object with complex curvature,” said John Skabardonis, Fantasia Color Technologies  Manager, BMS. “Designers will now have the opportunity to visualize a specific color or effect over a larger, more complex area.”

Peugeot-Citroen and FIAT-IVECO Visit Filago Color Competence Center

Filago CCC
Recently, the BMS AG Color Competence Center (CCC) in Filago, Italy, welcomed two important guests to its colorful haven – automotive manufacturers PSA Peugot-Citroen and FIAT-IVECO. While both arrived with different goals in mind, the dual visit was a marked testimony to the CCC’s strong presence and coveted expertise in the European plastics market.

Two designers from Peugeot-Citroen toured the facility, exploring the variety of coloring and special effects options available for car interior surfaces.

Experts at the Filago CCC later sat down with FIAT-IVECO to discuss embossed and glossy surface interiors; not only for cars, but also for heavy/light transport vehicles.
